Kalinga Mahotsav-Bhubaneswar, Orissa

Kalinga Mahotsav is a martial arts festival held at the footsteps of the Dhauli Stupa, the Japanese Buddhist Temple situated on a hill on the outskirts of modern Bhubaneswar . This is believed to have been the venue of Emperor Asoka's last battle - the Kalinga war. The great emperor surrendered his sword and embraced Buddhism after the Kalinga war and went on to become one of the great humanitarians the world has ever seen. He was responsible for the spread of Buddhism throughout Asia . There's an enormous statue of Buddha overlooking the stage from the top of the Stupa. The tranquil expanse of the countryside populated by paddy fields and cashew plantations provides the peaceful background to the outburst of movements and sounds which accompany the performance of the martial artists. The festival is organized by an organization called Art Vision in collaboration with Orissa Tourism and Nalco. The aim of the organizers is to 'harmonize the vigor of martial tradition with the sublimity of peace through dance performances'.
